Verona Palace is part of the group of houses that used to belong to the family clan Verona, situated in the locality “Grasovo”, north of the Parish church in Prčanj. The palace was built in the second half of the 18th century.
In the 18th century, Prčanj reached its pinnacle as a seafaring settlement; ships owned by local families sailed all over the Mediterranean. The Verona and Florio families had their trading branches in Corinth and Thebes, while those of the Luković family were in Corfu. The Verona family was one of the wealthiest families in Boka Kotorska.
The Verona family settled in Boka Kotorska from Skadar in 1478, when the town was taken from Venice by the Turks. They had first settled in Kotor and then moved to Prčanj. In about 1760, Captain Anton Andrijin Verona bought an estate in the Tivat area from the noble family Bizanti of Kotor. The estate included the Bizanti’s palace in Župa and the present-day Verona house on which the coat-of-arms of the Bizanti family has been preserved.
In Prčanj, the Verona family had about ten houses and a large palace, which was built by Captain Anton Verona between 1780 and 1790. Verona Palace was the largest palace in Prčanj, modelled on other Baroque palaces in Boka Kotorska. It is a four-storey building, with a belvedere. It was built of finely hewn stone. The second floor is enhanced by a centrally set balustraded balcony with Baroque features. The first and second floors had a characteristic “four rooms and a salon” layout. The interior of the palace was very valuable. The salon and rooms on the first floor had stucco decorations. The salon had a wooden Baroque altar. The palace was decorated with other valuable works of art.
